“Would You Believe?” by Billy Nicholls

In 1968, Andrew Loog Oldham* enlisted Billy Nicholls to create The British Response to Pet Sounds. The attempt proved too ambitious. Budget ran dry and the album was shelved for several years.

Too bad. This album often hints of greatness as is.

Fun fact: Because this was an Immediate Records joint, Small Faces are backing musicians (you can hear Steve Marriott doing his best Steve Marriott at 1’54).

* Yes, that Andrew Oldham, the one whose orchestra recorded The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time” which was sampled by The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony”.
