Microsoft is on the receiving end of a few jokes after naming it’s new search engine “Bing”, which some took to be a acronym that can be expanded to mean “But it’s not Google”. Some have suggested it’s a recursive acronym in the vein of computing traditions such as PINE (PINE is not Elm) and GNU (GNU’s not UNIX), meaning “BING is not Google”.
Whatever the case may be, it’s entirely likely Bing isn’t an allusion to Google at all.
