“Balm in Gilead” by The Byker Dykes
The story goes:
Matt was charged with picking the soundtrack for a play in which he and Gabel would star. The play, Balm in Gilead, would be set in the punk 1970s.
Instead of picking songs, Matt decided bake a few from scratch. He played guitar, bass and drums, recruited Gabel to sing and asked me to add guitar. This was way back when none of us could mix for shit, so the drums are buried. Sorry.
“Balm…” was the first song of three that comprised an E.P. we dubbed Bomb in Gilead. The tune is Matt’s; the lyrics are an old hymn. It was played once or twice on WTFX 100.5 FM, The Fox, back in spring 2004.
