Detroit

Everyone is a real estate speculator in Detroit. Sitting in the coffee shop right now, I’m overhearing at least three conversations about empty buildings and the plans people have for them. It’s like the wild west here—all you have to do is lay claim to something, and it’s yours. In many ways, Detroit is a sad and barren city, but there’s also a palpable energy here, like people are just starting to discover what could be.
