John C. Abell, writing about the debate over Flash on the iPhone/iPad, notes:
[Flash is] the most over-rated and overused crutch for decent design.
And in one phrase, he’s entirely summed up my feelings on Flash, both as a technology and as a tool for design.
While good design can be (and occasionally is) done using Flash, all too often something is made all whiz-bang-whirry,...

“If you want to know why one country does better or worse than another,” as Wilkinson and Pickett note simply, “the first thing to look at is the extent of inequality.”
The United States, the developed world’s most unequal major nation, ranks at or near the bottom on every quality-of-life indicator that Wilkinson and Pickett examine. Portugal and the UK, nations with...

Via Bearduary
I met the gents who run Bearduary on Tuesday night. They’re awesome. If you have a beard and like to drink and live in New York, you should drop them a line.

J: If i can get through a couple of days w/o hearing my roommate bawling in her room, I'd be happy.
What should I do in New York City this week?
roblr answered: visit the high line and eat a veggie burger at the place in madison square park. :) perhaps visit some studios! oh, and brooklyn free events
The High Line is beautiful. A ‘Shroom Burger at Shake Shack is indeed delicious. I visited Behance… is that good enough?
threeseven answered: 2 culinary favorites: Vol De Nuit for Belgian beer & mussels & Cafe Gitane for lunch....

It really gripes my ass that I moved to Portland for, among other things, great music and great beards and Britt Daniel, Isaac Brock, Stephen Malkmus, Chris Walla and a few others on the top shelf of well-known indie bands that contribute heavily to the musical ecology of Portland are utterly beardless.
So at least there’s this.

Olbermann on the recent Supreme Court decision that allows unlimited spending (“free speech”) by “corporate humans” for political campaigns: U.S. government for sale (transcript)
It’s interesting that he frames his opening in relationship to another disastrous Supreme Court ruling, Dred Scott, which affirmed that slaves were not human citizens in the eyes of the law, which led to...

O hai, UPS.
You know why people don’t use the post office anymore? Because they bend my posters in transit. How do you bend a poster in a tube? Those things are nearly indestructible. Is there a chimpanzee in the storage compartment of every truck, playing with the packages as cheap substitutes for fun jungle-like things? Srsly, USPS. I hate you now.
Today was the last straw.
You win this round, NYC
A quick little NYC vs Portland
Art: yes, yes Good music: yes, yes Public transit: yes, yes Beards: yes, yes Good beer: sure, yes Weird stuff: yes, yes Good improv: yes, no
That’s why I’m in New York right now, bitches.
